:

1. The protists can be divided into two categories: animal-like (those with a heterotrophic method of nutrition) or plant-like (those with an autotrophic  method of nutrition).

2. Animal-like protists can be divided into categories based on their method of locomotion.

    a. Phylum Rhizopoda (root foot)--movement by way of pseudopodia

          Examples included:

             amoeba, foraminiferans, radiolarians

                                limestone shell             glass shell

    b. Phylum Ciliaphora (cilia bearer)--movement by way of cilia

        Example included:

                paramecium

     c. Phylum Zoomastigophora (animal flagella bearer)--movement by

        way of flagella

        Example included:

trypanosoma--parasites are show in rbc smear

            causes African sleeping sickness

3. Plant-like protists are divided into various algal groups:

    a. Phylum Dinoflagellata (terrible flagellates)--cause red tides

        Example included:

           Perididium

    b. Phylum Bacillariophyta--the diatoms

all possess glass shells and come in many beautiful forms

    c. Phylum Chlorophyta--the green algae

        Volvox--colonial              Ulothrix--filamentous
