Chris Smith Head Baseball Coach
After serving two years as the assistant coach for the Eagles, Chris Smith is in his fourth season as head coach in Northeast Texas Community College. Smith is just the fourth head coach in the Eagles' history. During his
short time as the NTCC head coach, Smith has In 2007, Adam Resendez and Jeremy Travis were named NJCAA All-Americans. They were the program’s first All-Americas since the 1993 season. Resendez and Travis were joined on the all-conference team by John Dao and Kyle Cheesebrough. In the past three seasons, Smith has seen 25 student-athletes move on to play NCAA Division I baseball, including seven following the 2007 campaign. Smith was recently named an officer in the Texas New Mexico Baseball Coaches Association. Smith came to Northeast Texas from the University of Missouri, where he served as the Tigers' volunteer coach for two seasons. He worked with the pitchers, hitters, and outfielders and was part of rebuilding process that has seen the Tigers advance to NCAA Tournament the past five years. A Missouri native, Smith was born in Columbia and raised in Jefferson City. He attended Jefferson City High School, lettering in baseball and wrestling. After high school, Smith moved to Lincoln University. At Lincoln, Smith was chosen to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association team, lettered two years, and named the team's outstanding hitter and outstanding defensive player. Smith then transferred to the University of Iowa, where he was a two-year letterwinner. Smith finished his collegiate career as a .304 hitter with 16 home runs. After graduation, Smith started his career coaching at William Woods University located in Fulton, Mo. He helped start the program, which saw immediate success in its first year. After one season at William Woods, Smith decided to play professionally with the Johnstown Johnnies in the Frontier League. After the professional season, Smith rejoined the William Woods coaching staff. Following a two-year stint at William Woods and after graduating with his masters in business administration, Smith then joined the staff at the University of Missouri. During the summer collegiate seasons, Smith has coached in several different leagues from coast to coast. Smith had two different stints in the Jayhawk League with Nevada Griffons and Liberal Beejays. He was the head coach at Liberal. He also spent one year as the pitching coach for the Durham Braves in the Coastal Plains league and one season with the San Luis Obispo Blues in the California Coastal League. During his four seasons, Smith compiled a record of 140-84 and two top 10 finishes in the NBC World Series. Smith is also the director of athletics at Northeast Texas Community College. NTCC currently has several building projects under way and Smith is serving as the school’s construction manager. In addition to the improvements to Eagle Field at Bob Baker Stadium, NTCC is building a $500,000 recreational complex, a new softball field and a $1.4 million aquatics center. Smith is married to the former Dara Dodson of Pittsburg. The couple has a 3-year-old daughter, Sydney Danielle. The couple is expecting another child during the 2008 season.
