12-10-05 NTCC athletes in good academic standing by Pat Tallant At a recent meeting of the Northeast Texas Community College Board of Trustees, Athletic Director Chris Smith gave a report on the men’s baseball and women’s fast-pitch softball programs at the college. When asked about the overall academic standing of these athletes, Coach Smith said, “We are very proud of all our student athletes here at NTCC. They represent our school in a very positive manner on the field as well as in the classroom.” “For the previous spring semester,” said Coach Smith, “the average grade point (GPA) campus-wide for full-time students was 3.01. The average GPA for our baseball students was 3.17, and softball was 3.08. Out of our 26 baseball students, 18 had GPA’s above 3.0, with four students obtaining a perfect 4.0. Eleven of our softball students had a GPA above 3.0, with one student achieving a 4.0.” According to Dr. Charles Florio, NTCC President, “Our athletes take a variety of demanding courses, and their participation in sports helps make it possible for them to develop ideals that equate to success in the classroom. They are required to meet the same academic standards as all our other students, and their GPAs measure up well. We recognize that participation in athletic competition can be very gratifying and develops character through discipline.” Coach Smith added, “This is also a testament to all our coaches and their commitment to academics as they sacrifice a lot of personal time to monitor grades and study halls to ensure that we prepare our student athletes for life off the field as well as on.”
