Wellborn Inks with Muleriders

Northeast Texas Community College’s Brandon Wellborn has signed a National Letter of Intent with Southern Arkansas University. Wellborn, from Hughes Springs, TX., becomes the second Eagle hurler to sign during the early signing period. Brandon joins fellow right hand pitcher Scott Bittle, who recently sign with Ole Miss.

“Brandon’s velocity and command made him a valuable commodity to 4 year institutions this fall,” says head coach Chris Smith. “Southern Arkansas is getting a power arm that can be used in a number of different roles.”

The 6 foot 190 pound righty made an immediate impact during his freshman campaign of 2005. Brandon finished the season with a 3-1 mark, seeing opportunities out of the bullpen and as a starter. He recorded wins in both games he started, against Angelina College and Bossier Parish Community College. His 3rd win came out of the pen as he pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam, against Paris Junior College.  Brandon spent the summer as a member of the Nevada Griffons, a member of the always competitive Jayhawk League. Nevada completed the summer with a 9th place finish in the National Baseball Congress World Series. Again, Brandon displayed his versatility as both a starter and a reliever, where his fastball routinely registered in the 90-93 mph range.

Brandon chose Southern Arkansas over the University of Southeastern Louisiana, University of Louisiana at Monroe and Liberty University. The Muleriders finished the 2005 campaign with a 34-25 record and 15-9 in the Gulf South Conference.
