Eagles Start New Year

(08/30/07) Mt Pleasant TX-The Eagles have once again started the year with high hopes and a new crop of young men.  “We are excited about this year’s group of kids.” said Head Coach Chris Smith.  “I feel that we have a lot of talent this year and more team speed than we have had in the past.  We have some very talented pitchers this year and should have depth on the mound.”

In 2007 the Eagles ran into some hard luck with some key injures on the mound.  Sophomore Cole Bishop was slated to be one of NTCC’s conference starters went down with an arm injury while Freshman, Blake Barber after four quality appearances went down for the rest of the year with a pulled oblique muscle.

“We ran into some tough luck last year, but our guy’s battled day in and day out to win ball games.  This year it looks like we will have 6 or 7 guys battling it out for starting spots in the rotation and another 6 guys that have a chance to pitch a lot of innings for us.  Hopefully that will correct the issues we had last year if we get some guys hurt.”  said Coach Smith.

The Eagles return several players that had significant playing time in 2007.  On the mound NTCC will return Blake Ford (Lufkin, TX) who compiled a 5-3 record and logged over 45 innings last year.  Also returning on the mound will be Blake Barber (Kenner, LA) and Sophomore Josh Krummel (Montgomery, TX).  “All three of theses guys will see significant time on the mound again and we expect great things from them.”

Positionally, NTCC will return three starters in Daniel Qualls (San Antonio, TX), Kevin Schlegel (Oklahoma City, OK) and Josh Krummel (Montgomery, TX).  These three guys all had over 100 AB’s for us last year and hit very well.  We were a very offensive ball club and we are looking to them to be team leaders and continue to play well.”  said Coach Smith.  “With the freshman that we brought in and the mix of the older guys, once we learn the system we should be able to continue the success we have had in the past. I am proud of the way our guys have been working and look forward to the strides we will make over our fall season.”

The Eagles will open up at home for the fall season on September 22 against conference foe Lon Morris.
