NTCC Baseball tops GPA Lists
(02/18/07)

MOUNT PLEASANT, TX -- The Northeast Texas Community College Baseball team once again has eclipsed its top GPA mark.  This past fall the Eagles posted a 3.32 GPA which eclipsed the previous high of 3.17.

"The fall of 2006 was good for us athletically and academically" said Head Coach Chris Smith.  "We tell all of our guys when they first come in that they need to have two equal priorities, baseball and school.  We push them hard on the field as well as off to make sure that both objectives are met and exceeded.  The harsh reality is that most baseball players will never be able to earn enough money to sustain a living off of baseball alone.  They must have their education as a foundation for success."

Since Coach Smith became the head coach in 2004 the Eagles team GPA has been no less than a 3.10 and as high as this semesters 3.32.  "This is quite an accomplishment for our guys, our program, and our school.  The national average for baseball teams is approximately 2.6 GPA and our average full time student here at NTCC is a little over 3.00.  For us to be able to stay at the upper levels speaks highly of the dedication of not only our baseball players but our faculty as well.  I have never been associated with a group of faculty members that is more willing to meet with students, and personally spend the time to help them than here at NTCC.  The Faculty here must receive as much praise as any of our players.  It is truly a group effort here at Northeast."

The Eagle baseball team had 15 players over the 3.0 mark with 3 achieving a perfect 4.0.
