Program Overview

Program Description

The academy is designed to provide:

  • a foundation for effective college teaching;
  • opportunities to actively interact with and receive special assistance from full-time master faculty members; and
  • an array of teaching and classroom management ideas to help you successfully meet the needs of students.

We expect that participation in this teaching academy will build classroom competence and personal confidence, which will, in turn, lead to greater student achievement.

Critical instruction training that will be offered through this Academy include:

  • Planning instruction
  • Integrating academic and workforce education
  • Teaching adult students
  • Teaching with technology
  • Employing effective teaching strategies and techniques
  • Evaluating your teaching and student performance
  • Managing diversity in the classroom
  • Valuing the role of the community college in higher education

Mentoring/Classroom Observation:
Each academy participant will be assigned a mentor. Mentors are faculty members who have demonstrated successful teaching skills, and who have taught at a college on a full-time or part-time basis for five or more years. The participant is expected to spend a minimum of four (4) hours in consultation or interaction with the mentor during the training period. One classroom observation will be an integral part of the mentoring process.
